Introductory training workshop…
StreamWatch is hosting a volunteer stream monitor training session on Saturday January 16, from 10am – 3pm in Charlottesville. The session will cover the fundamentals of stream biological sampling—catching and identifying aquatic invertebrates for the purpose of evaluating water quality and stream health. The workshop is free, but class size is limited. To reserve a space, or for further information about volunteering, contact Rose.

Bob’s Bug Facts…

Caddisflies breathe by absorbing dissolved oxygen in the water through their skin. Common Netspinners have gills on their abdomens (“fuzzy bellies”), so they are able to absorb sufficient oxygen even in water where oxygen levels are low (because of high temperatures or impairment). Those gills, in reality, are nothing but additional skin!
